National Ignores New Zealand Youth

National Ignores New Zealand Youth

The National Party’s failure to appoint a youth affairs spokesperson in its recent reshuffle demonstrates how out of touch Don Brash is with the youth sector.

“This is yet another example that the National Party is not concerned with representing New Zealanders outside of its own traditional support base.

“Following the recent reshuffle the National shadow cabinet now consists entirely of people of European descent, and only contains two women out of fifteen,” said Young Labour President Michael Wood.

This is not the first time Don Brash has disestablished an important portfolio. Under his leadership Brash has removed the portfolios of Disarmament, Women’s Affairs, Ethnic Affairs and now Youth Affairs. Simon Power previously held the position of Youth Affairs spokesperson

“This speaks volumes about the National Party and the issues and sectors of New Zealand that it considers worthy of representation. If there were any young people wondering what the National Party had to offer their generation, there is no question now that the answer is, ‘nothing’,” concluded Mr Wood.
