Sell the regional parks, cut regional rates says Libertarianz
"No more ratepayers money on Regional Parks" declared Libertarianz Leader and Wellington Regional Council candidate Bernard Darnton as he outlined his policy on parks and forests today.
"Around $5 million is being taken from ratepayers this year for parks most don't use or even know exist," said Darnton, "and the current Regional Council wants to expand it more with a new park at Whitereia and a proposed Wairarapa Wetlands Park."
"Libertarianz opposes any expansion of local government activities, and would call upon advocates of Regional Parks to raise money themselves to pay for them either by donation, commercial sponsorship or user fees. I will resist any new spending on capital works on parks and forests, and instead use the sale of forests to pay off Council debt" said Darnton.
"Biodiversity is best protected by those who have a passion for it, having a stake in the land where species live. Private landowners are effective in managing pest plants and animals on their property, so should private owners of regional parks and forests"
"Libertarianz supports smaller councils, and selling our Regional Parks would be a great first step" concluded Darnton.
