MFish considers staff suggestions

The Ministry of Fisheries is considering staff suggestions about proposals to realign enforcement and prosecution services to effectively deliver on fisheries management objectives.

"The proposals are focused on increased effectiveness rather than reducing services," said the Ministry's Deputy Chief Executive, Stan Crothers. "We have commenced a process of active engagement with our staff to ensure that we get a complete picture of our compliance operations throughout the country."

Staff meetings were held in all of the Ministry's districts, with staff encouraged to make formal submissions on the proposals and provide options. Following evaluation of submissions, final recommendations on the future compliance business structure will be made to the Ministry's executive.

"There has been a tremendous response with over 60 submissions received from individual compliance staff and teams from around the Country," Mr Crothers said.

"Considerable effort has been made in the development of some very comprehensive submissions, and I am confident we will have a very good base of information on which to make final recommendations.

"The response confirms the commitment our staff have to the effective management of our fisheries."

Decisions on the final recommendations are expected in early November.
