RCCNZ Locates Yacht at Centre of Search
The Rescue Coordination Centre of NZ has located the yacht, Raya, which has been at the centre of a large search effort off the northeast coast of the North Island.
There had been concern for the safety of the vessel after she twice failed to report in to the Maritime Operations Centre (MOC) as had earlier been arranged.
The yacht eventually made contact with the MOC on HF radio at approximately 6.30pm, and she is not in any danger. She is currently approximately 60 nautical miles northeast of Opua.
Search and Rescue Officer, Roger Brimacombe, said that the RCCNZ was disappointed at the Skipper’s failure to keep to their communication agreement with the Centre.
“ Obviously we are relieved that the Raya has been located, and that those on board are safe and sound, and in no danger. However, it is frustrating to say the least when the entire search operation could have been avoided had they only kept in touch as agreed,” he said.
The 43-foot yacht was on passage from the Netherlands to New Zealand when she reported a problem with her rig early yesterday morning, and was concerned enough with her condition to set up a communications schedule.
