"Not in my name" - NOW is the time to act

"Not in my name" - NOW is the time to act

Kia ora

If you saw last night's documentary on TV One, you will be left in no doubt that a gross injustice is being perpetrated against Ahmed Zaoui.

The programme has provided new insights into Mr Zaoui's plight.

If you did see the documentary, you will no doubt be even more concerned at the Government's latest appeal to the Supreme Court against the need for the Inspector General to take into account Mr Zaoui human rights.

If you feel moved to do something, here are some suggestions.

We need to tell the Government that they are not treating Mr Zaoui in our name. "Not in my name" needs to be the message we send to the Government:

Write a letter to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Immigration, the Hon Paul Swain: psswain@ministers.govt.nz and fax: 04 495 8466.

Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper

Write a letter to Mr Zaoui: c/o Auckland Central Remand Prison, PO Box 8180, Symonds St, Auckland Central

Make an appointment to see your local MP

Contribute to the campaign fund - we need funds to publish the Refugee Status Appeals Authority decision (we need $6,000)

Think of ways you can contribute to the campaign with your skills (eg graphic design). If you are a poet- write a poem, an artist - paint a picture, a lawyer - write an article or contact the legal team.

Think of ways you could contribute to an art auction which will be held soon (a painting, sculpture, piece of music)

"The power of the executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious, and the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist."
