Campaign to remove Destiny Church from our schools

Thursday 23rd December

Campaign to remove Destiny Church from our schools’

Destiny church Wellington, who hold their weekly church services at Wellington High school have ignored the wishes of a 603 strong petition of the 1100 student population calling for their removal.

We, the students have continued in our attempts to draw attention to this issue; however our attempts have been washed over by the board and principal. Principal Prue Kelly has refused to reopen negotiations even after the Wellington Pastor, Campbell Bond said to his congregation that they will not leave until this place is “packed.”

This has shocked and angered students especially year 12 student, Anne Moar (17) the “Not in our schools’, Destiny” Campaign spokesperson. “The time has come for Destiny Church to leave our school. Since September we have urged them to leave, we have been more than patient and yet our tolerance has been abused. Destiny Church and its affiliated political party, Destiny New Zealand, are a destructive force who preach hate out of schools’, and this is not ok!”

It is, however incredibly ironic that in a school where there is a support group for homosexuals and sexually questioning members of our society, that this church would continue to rent Wellington High. Destiny Church does not reflect the community or culture of Wellington High School, if anything they are the antithesis of what it is our school stands for.

Moar says, “As a first year student, Wellington High School has been refreshing change from the draconian practises of my former Wellington based single sexed school. And yet I was horrified to learn that Destiny used Wellington High. Destiny Church is the personification of the utilitarian practises that I sort to escape.”

We have lobbied the Board of Trustees, who have ignored our emails. We have lobbied politicians who have been accommodating. Now we will force this debate into the public arena.
