tsunami
Aid and relief agency TEAR Fund New Zealand says it has been overwhelmed by New Zealanders' compassionate response to the disaster in Southern Asia.
Since initiating its disaster relief appeal, TEAR Fund has received tens of thousands of dollars from concerned New Zealanders.
"The response of New Zealanders' to this crisis demonstrates their enormous generosity and concern. So much must be done to ensure the survival of the millions who are now without food, water, shelter and sanitation," says TEAR Fund Executive Director Stephen Tollestrup.
On Boxing Day an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The subsequent tsunami devastated the coastal areas of Southern Asia. Up to 80,000 people are confirmed dead, with thousands more missing and millions homeless. The United Nations has described this as the worst disaster in recent history.
Operating through partner agencies in Southern Asia, TEAR Fund is providing emergency relief, including food materials, utensils, hygiene kits, water purification tablets and temporary shelter.
