Injured Mt Cook Climber Rescued
The Rescue Coodination centre has successfully coordinated the rescue of an injured climber on Mt Cook.
The male climber, who suffered a broken leg, was airlifted off Mt Cook at around 10:00am by a rescue helicopter called in from Christchurch. He is now being flown to Christchurch hospital for treatment.
The climber had activated his beacon last night and a helicopter and fixed wing aircraft were called in to locate the source of the emergency signal at first light this morning.
RCCNZ Search and Rescue Mission Controller, Dave Wilson, said that the rescue was both a testament to the skills of the local rescue teams, and the importance of taking a distress beacon when engaged in these sorts of activities.
