Media Advisory - 11 March 2005
"After a long and often intense struggle, the Relationships Bill looks set to pass into law on Tuesday 15th March 2005. The passing of this Bill marks the culmination of years of work by many dedicated volunteers and ensures equal rights for same sex couples to officially register and celebrate their relationships," said Cameron Law, convenor for the Campaign for Civil Unions.
"The gay and lesbian community will be gathering to celebrate this momentous occasion at the 20th annual Gay and Lesbian Fair at Newtown School. MPs Marian Hobbs and Tim Barnett along with the Mayor of Wellington Kerry Prendergast will open this festival with speeches at 9:30.
"At 12 pm Civil Union poster boys Des Smith and John Joliffe will symbolically cut a cake (at the Civil Union stall) in celebration of their engagement and pending civil union, scheduled for 1st May.
"Representatives from the Campaign for Civil Unions, Christians for Civil Union, and Civil Union Bill Support Society (CUBBS) will also be running a stall providing information about how the new legislation will affect couples and how people can obtain a civil union," Cameron Law said.
