St Matthew’s to celebrate a century in stone

5th April 2005
MEDIA RELEASE

St Matthew’s to celebrate a century, majestic in stone

To celebrate 100 years since its completion, Auckland’s iconic stone church, St Matthew-in-the-City, will hold a special worship service on Sunday May 1st at 10am.

The service will be themed “Majestic in Stone” and features grand music befitting the occasion performed by the Musica Sacra choir, organist Dr John Wells, and conducted by Indra Hughes.

Dignitaries from local and national government will be in attendance, as well as representatives from architects and engineers groups with connections to the building. Leaders of Auckland’s Masonic organisation, which played a key role in the construction of the church, will also be present.

“There is a timeless quality to this magnificent building,” says vicar of St Matthew’s, Revd Glynn Cardy.

“This has enhanced the many weddings, christenings, events and services that have happened here over the last century. We warmly welcome everyone from the community to join with us in celebrating the place of this church in the life of the city.”

Free parking is available in the car park next door to the church. A morning tea will follow the service.

For more information about this event, phone the St Matthew’s church office on 09 379 0625, or visit the web site www.stmatthews.org.nz
