Local Government gets behind Every Child Counts

Following the launch of Every Child Counts on 19 April 2005, campaign organisers have applauded local body politicians for supporting the project.

“Every Child Counts is about creating a more prosperous and secure future for all New Zealanders so I am delighted to see local government mayors supporting the campaign,” said Wynne Raymond, former Mayor of Timaru and Every Child Counts Steering Group member. He currently chairs the Aoraki Polytechnic Council and for twelve years was Mayor of Timaru until retiring before the 2004 local body elections.

Sixteen mayors have now signed up as supporters of Every Child Counts. They come from the Far North District, Franklin District, Hauraki, South Waikato, Otorohanga, New Plymouth, Stratford, Napier City, Masterton District, Upper Hutt City, Wellington City, Horowhenua District, Buller District, Timaru District, Ashburton District and the Queenstown Lakes District.

Wynne Raymond said, “The response from local government is a welcome indication of support for the objectives of our campaign. If we are to get it right for children, we need politicians at every level – in local and central government - to recognise just how important children are to the future of New Zealand.”

“Let’s hope all the others sign up too. There is no question that local government makes a huge contribution to the quality of life for children and their families. To have this support so soon after the public launch of the campaign is most heartening.”

Every Child Counts is a coalition of individuals and organisations from all sectors of New Zealand campaigning to promote children issues in the context of the general election. In particular they want to see children at the centre of policy, a good early start for every child, an end to child poverty, and a reduction in child abuse and neglect.

“It is exciting to see New Zealanders from all walks of life – mayors, bishops, retired people, business people, the farming community and city dwellers – supporting the campaign,” concluded Wynne Raymond. “I urge everyone to sign up.”
