Third sector community housing group applauds budget announcements

The Community Renewal programme that forms a part of the Governments commitment to improve housing conditions for families in need has been continued for a further three years.

Habitat for Humanity Manukau Chairman Ken Stevenson, welcomes this announcement. “We have valued the partnership between ourselves as a not for profit community organisation and the Crown in assisting families in real need into affordable home ownership”.

The Community Renewal partnership has seen Habitat for Humanity Manukau able to build 20 entry level houses in the Clendon area in South Auckland. “The significance in this project is that by the end of 2006 we will have built 30 houses all in the same vicinity, and there is a true sense of community developing. When hard working families are settled, and committed to owning their own home, their future and their children’s futures are far more secure” reports Mr Stevenson.

“When families put the hard effort into building their own home, and receive the practical support that Habitat for Humanity and its partners offer; it is clear to me that a very real impact on communities occurs,” Prime Minister Helen Clark says.

The Community Renewal programme has established effective working relationships with the crown and Habitat for Humanity Manukau.
