Where are all the conservation champions?

They may be modest or too busy to fill out forms, but voluntary conservation toilers in the Wellington region are being given a gentle reminder of the July 6 closing date for nominations for the 10th Wellington Conservation Awards.

None have been received to date to the consternation of the Department of Conservation and Wellington Conservation Board. But they are hoping a last minute flurry of activity will ensure conservation achievements in the community receive the recognition they deserve.

“We know there are some wonderful voluntary conservation projects being carried out throughout the Wellington region and we encourage people to nominate the groups and individuals involved for this year’s awards,” DOC Wellington Conservancy community relations manager Jeff Flavell said.

An aviation history project, a river trail development, a scheme to help people with disabilities into employment, and conservation restoration and advocacy initiatives were among the projects acknowledged at last year’s awards which attracted 17 nominees.

“We are sure there must be at least that many individuals and groups deserving of an award this year,” Mr Flavell said.

Awarded annually by DOC’s Wellington Conservancy and the Wellington Conservation Board, the Wellington Conservation Awards recognise sustained community involvement in conservation. The recipients will be announced and the awards presented by the Minister of Conservation on August 4, during Conservation Week.
