Bishop Tamaki wins the gays’ hearts?

UniQ Victoria, the support group for Victoria University’s non-heterosexual students, is proud to announce the shortlisted nominees for The Glammies—Wellington’s community awards for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community—with self-proclaimed Bishop Brian Tamaki garnering two nominations for “Most Fabulous Hairdo” and “HeteroHero”.

The Glammies will be held at Parliament’s Grand Hall on September 17 hosted by Wellington Central MP Marian Hobbs.

Paul Brown, President of UniQ Victoria says Tamaki’s nominations show all his efforts to oppress and marginalise the GLBT community have backfired on him.

“The ‘HeteroHero’ nomination was initially a surprise. I think that Destiny’s Enough is Enough campaign really united the GLBT community more than anything since homosexual law reform. I think it illustrated to ‘mainstream’ Kiwis the threat to our personal freedoms that fundamentalists pose. If anything that march helped sway people’s support to the civil unions and the GLBT community, as they didn’t want to see New Zealand head down the fundamentalist route.”

Other nominees for the ‘HeteroHero’ award include David Benson-Pope who introduced the Bill into parliament and Prime Minister Helen Clark. The full list of nominees is available in the August issue of UP magazine and on www.gaynz.com

Sponsorsed by UP magazine, Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association, Cosmic Corner and Pound nightclub, The Glammies tickets go on sale on 15 August exclusively through Cosmic Corner’s Wellington shops.

Paul says,“Tickets are inexpensive and have always sold fast for The Glammies, this year there will be no door sales so we encourage everyone to head down to Cosmic Corner and get theirs to avoid disappointment.”
