TEAR Fund New Zealand launches emergency Niger appeal
TEAR
Fund New Zealand has launched an emergency appeal to address
the
needs of those affected by the devastating famine in
Niger.
As many as 3.6 million people are facing chronic
food shortages in Niger,
including 150,000 children
suffering from severe malnutrition. Jan
Egeland, UN
Under-Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator,
has
described this crisis as, "The number one forgotten
and neglected
emergency in the world."
TEAR Fund,
through its local partner organisations, is operating
emergency
feeding centers in Niger, and is distributing
animal feed as well as
providing trucks so farmers can
transport cattle to improved grazing
areas.
The public
can give to TEAR Fund's Niger Famine Appeal by phoning 0800
800
777.
