Police Minister Poorly Advised Over Police Recruitment And Retention Issues

"It's a shame the Police Minister has attacked the Police Association as the ones raising the recruiting and retention issue, when in reality it was Police themselves who brought the issue to the public," NZ Police Association President, Mr O'Connor said today.

"The issue was raised publicly by Police Recruiting last week because it is a very real issue," said Mr O'Connor. (*see Wanganui Chronicle "No one wants to be a Cop" 29/07/05)

Mr O'Connor was commenting on the Police Minister's dismissal of the recruiting crisis made today.

"The Minister should also talk to the Police Human Resource people who held a crisis meeting on the topic yesterday," said Mr O'Connor. "Unfortunately, in the past denying there is a problem has lead to methamphetamine, organised crime and the crisis in Police 111 emergency response becoming endemic.

"The Association will, as it did with the issues around methamphetamine, organised crime and Police Communication Centres, continue to work to have problems addressed before they become chronic. This is certainly the case now with frontline police numbers."
