ESP the only way to counter record Trade Deficits

NZ’s trade deficits will only be alleviated by supporting exporters says Destiny New Zealand’s Deputy Leader and Finance Spokesperson Mr. David Jesze.

He said more bad surprises would be on the horizon after the July year trade deficit was announced yesterday, swelling from $3.42 billion last year to $5.4 billion this year.

“The only way to improve this trade deficit is to focus on supporting our exporters. Exchange rates and high demand levels for imported goods mean imports will continue to be strong,” says Mr Jesze.

He says Destiny New Zealand recognises the importance of exports and has a dedicated ESP – Exporters Support Policy.

“Unfortunately only a small percentage of New Zealand businesses actually export,” says Mr Jesze. “With a small population of only 4.1 million people and our geographical isolation, our markets are limited and therefore export is not an option but an absolute “must”. The recent record trade deficits show clearly that it is imperative we provide incentives for exporters in order to encourage smaller businesses to export.”

“Destiny New Zealand supports tax breaks for exporters and the employment of target driven New Zealand sales managers responsible for bringing new business to NZ instead of diplomatic cocktail outposts. Further, dedicated marketing support by experienced professionals will help market our products overseas.”

Mr Jesze manages a successful exporting business which won the “Auckland Emerging Exporter of the Year Award” in 2004.
