Give a pig this Christmas
This December thousands of New Zealanders will delicately unwrap their Christmas gifts, only to discover they have not been given the usual tired pair of socks, but a pig, a goat or a fishing boat.
TEAR Fund is offering the chance to purchase fun gifts with a real difference this festive season: gifts that are received by communities in the developing world living in extreme poverty.
TEAR Fund launched New Zealand's first alternative gift catalogue last Christmas. The catalogue proved so popular, it has been expanded to present an exciting new range of gift ideas.
When a purchase is made from the catalogue, a card detailing the gift is sent out, which can be personalised and presented to friends or family. The purchased item is given directly to a person in desperate need.
In all there are 12 items in the catalogue, which start in price from just $5 for safe water for a child in India.
Other gifts include healthy baby supplies for women in Cambodia, immunisations for children in India, pigs for poor farmers in China, calves for families in Afghanistan, fishing boats for tsunami devastated villages in Indonesia and much more.
When spent in the right place, even a small amount can make a significant difference. By purchasing from the Gift for Life catalogue, New Zealanders are establishing lasting change amongst the world's poorest communities
