Medicinal Cannabis Group Optimistic Of Legal Medicine This Parliamentary Term.

Greencross, New Zealand's Medicinal Cannabis Support Group, welcomes the apparent softening of the United Future Outdoors party's attitude towards medicinal cannabis and the legislative possibilities that creates. This would comply with the findings of the health select committee hearings and would reflect democracy in progress.

This term Labour have agreed to United Future Outdoors demand that the government won't decriminalise the recreational use of cannabis. This is a significant softening on the 2002 agreement, which included opposition to any change at all in the cannabis laws.

"This leaves the door open to allowing medical marijuana users legal access to their medicine. This would relieve the suffering of thousands of New Zealanders currently forced to break the law to get an effective relief with less side effects than many legal drugs. It will also rectify the blackmarket situation where affordable medication has become very expensive, especially for low income people or sickness beneficiaries, compounding their financial problems." Said Billy Mckee, Greencross Coordinator.

" It's good news that New Zealanders support for the simple idea that the ill and suffering shouldn't be arrested for getting their medicine has changed United Future's stance. Their viewpoint now complies with the Human rights act."
