Post-Tsunami - Where to from here for Aceh?

Will peace last?

A public meeting by Imam Syuja MP and Hendra Budian a human rights lawyer is coming up soon in Wellington. Both are from Aceh and are visiting to discuss post-tsunami reconstruction and the progress of the peace agreement signed on the 15 August.

Mr Imam Syuja is a member of the House of Representatives (DPR-RI) from the National Mandate Party. In the DPR he is a member of the Committee for Inter Parliamentary Cooperation. He is chairman of the Achenese Task Force (ATF), an independent organisation of community leaders to promote a peaceful solution to the conflict in Aceh.

Mr Henry Budian is an Acehnese lawyer who is currently Programme Director at Aceh’s Judicial monitoring Institute (AJMI). He was also a former vice director of the respected and independent Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (LBH) in Banda Aceh, one of the few human rights organisations in Aceh allowed to operate after the introduction of Martial Law in May 2002.

With their backgrounds and insider knowledge they will be able to provide social, political and economic analysis about the current situation and future of Aceh.
