Corrections Receives Notice Of Industrial Action

The Department of Corrections today confirmed it has received notice of industrial action by Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) CANZ members.

Corrections Inmate Employment Manager Brent Maughan says CANZ have given notice their CIE members intend to withdraw a number of administrative duties from Monday 10 April 2006.

“Corrections Inmate Employment provides prisoners with employment skills and training to assist them to find sustainable post-release employment,” says Mr Maughan.

“We have been negotiating with CANZ towards a new collective employment agreement for some time but have been unable to reach an agreement.

“Staff and public safety and prisoner welfare are our absolute priority and these will not be compromised by the industrial action. The action only affects a small portion of Corrections – around 150 of the 5,300 staff Corrections employs.

“Corrections is willing to continue discussions with CANZ and is disappointed that they feel it is necessary to take this action.”
