AA urges motorists to update road code knowledge

AA urges motorists to update their road code knowledge

Motorists have a responsibility to read and know the road code.

The AA’s comments follow a campaign by Christchurch Police to target driver behaviour at intersections. Earlier this week, approximately one in two drivers were stopped for incorrectly using lanes when turning, many of whom were unaware they were breaking the law, and were issued with a $150 ticket.

“While the AA believes the Police would have been far better to stop the offending motorists and warn them, drivers need to ensure they know the rules of the road,” says AA spokesperson Simon Lambourne.

“It does not take much effort to pick up the latest copy of the road code every now and again and update your knowledge. Doing so may not only save your wallet but also your life.”

Copies of the New Zealand Road Code can be purchased from AA Centres and bookshops. It is also available free of charge on the Land Transport New Zealand website http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/
