ECO Conference Now Open for Registration
ECO has announced the theme for the 2006 annual conference: Living Sustainably - Taking Charge of the Future. Practical workshops about community action and discussions of key environmental issues are all on the agenda for the three-day conference.
Environment and conservation groups from across the country will come together for this national summit from 30 June to 2 July. A variety of expert speakers will talk on pressing issues such as climate change, marine and coastal management, sustainable energy options and water allocation.
The conference is focussed on community organisation, and action to address these issues. Proactive workshops about fundraising, group capacity building and legal advice for grassroots environmental organisations are also on the program.
Anyone interested in environmental issues can apply to register for the conference. People from non-government organisations, and central and local government are welcomed, as are interested members of the public. Students pay a special discounted rate.
A variety of accommodation is available for conference-goers. There are affordable on-site bunkrooms at the conference venue – the Waharau Outdoor Centre in Kaiaua, outside of Auckland. Other options within a few kilometres of the venue. Some transportation is available from the Auckland airport, as well as pick-up options from Thames and the Miranda turn-off.
The setting for the conference – the beautiful Waharau Regional Park – has tramping trails and hot pools. A visit to see the Miranda shorebirds is just one of many available outdoor activities.
The conference aims to provide a forum for positive discussion of a range of issues, and encourages shared knowledge and experience. It is open to anyone who wants to take action for the environment, and learn about practical ways to address the issues that affect us all on a personal, local and global level.
