Caritas NZ Pledges Support for Timor Leste

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand has pledged an initial $20,000 to assist with the humanitarian crisis in Timor Leste.

Caritas Chief Executive, Michael Smith, says the money pledged will be part of the wider Caritas confederation response.

Our partners, Caritas Dili and Caritas Australia are working on the ground assisting those without shelter and care for some of the 50,000 displaced people who have fled to Churches, convents and other Catholic institutions in surrounding regions in seek of refuge since the outbreak of unrest in East Timor.

“The situation is still volatile and many people are reluctant to return home. In some cases their homes have been caught in the cross-fire of this recent unrest and will need to be rebuilt,” said Mr Smith.

To date, Caritas partners have provided short-term needs such as clothing, bedding and hygiene kits to those displaced. These needs will continue to be monitored as on-the-ground reports are assessed.

The Caritas confederation will be looking to send an international assessment team to the area in the coming days to establish further long-term needs.

Caritas assistance is provided to people based on their need, regardless of any religious affiliation.
