More New Zealanders leave Lebanon with Royal Navy

Media Advisory – Lebanon

More New Zealanders leaving Lebanon are aboard a British navy ship which is due in Cyprus late this afternoon/evening (NZT).

The Ministry understands about 20 New Zealanders will be on this ship and a ferry chartered by the United Nations, the MV Serenade. It was also scheduled to arrive in Cyprus today.

Due to the time it will take for the estimated 1500 evacuees to disembark and clear immigration in Cyprus, the Ministry is not expecting to be able to confirm the number of New Zealanders who have arrived for some hours.

Ministry staff and the honorary consul in Cyprus will be on hand to help New Zealanders, including with finding accommodation and arranging onward travel arrangements. Officials in Wellington are working around the clock to contact New Zealanders still in Lebanon to advise them of evacuation procedures.

The latest Ministry advice to New Zealanders still in Lebanon can be found at http://www.safetravel.govt.nz
