MFAT Files Released in Annual
Review
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has today released more than 1,500 previously restricted files for public access.
The annual release of files is part of the Ministry’s programme of making classified material publicly available, with the latest files covering events mainly from the 1940’s through to the 1970’s.
The files include collections on the following:
- Defence and security matters during World War II, the Paris Peace Conference and post-war settlements with Germany and Japan.
- Establishment of the EEC (now the European Union) and New Zealand’s negotiation of special trading arrangements
- Papers from the 1920s and 1930s dealing with League of Nations matters, and others covering major disarmament discussions and conferences of the time.
- Establishment and early meetings of the United Nations.
As in previous years, the files include material returned from the Ministry’s overseas posts.
Rather than releasing files after a fixed period such as 30 years, the Ministry reviews and releases closed files as soon as practicable, subject to resource and international document release agreements.
The files are available to the public at Archives New Zealand in Wellington.
