Sponsorship Offer For Icebreaker
Further to recent correspondence on "Scoop" between Barbara Sumner Burstyn and Jeremy Moon of Icebreaker in which the latter insists his company is manufacturing product in the "new" China and not the "old", Judith Bell - author of "I See Red" (proudly published and printed in New Zealand by Awa Press) - has offered sponsorship of two printed New Zealand made tee shirts for Mr Moon to wear on his next trip to China.
One tee shirt will have the words "Free Tibet" written on it with Chinese characters and the other will read "Support Falun Gong".
"I was prompted to make this offer after learning of Ms Burstyns suggestion to Mr Moon that he wear these tee shirts publicly in China to see how the "new" China responds", said Mrs Bell from Mt Maunganui today.
"As we all know, Mr Moon could wear these tee shirts on any public street in New Zealand without fear of official harrassment, punishment or loss of freedom for the intent of the message proclaimed. However if Mr Moon intends wearing them during his next visit to China I suggest he makes contingency plans for the running of his business back in New Zealand as I believe it would be quite some time before he was able to return."
"As bright and shiny as the picture Mr Moon is attempting to paint about the benefits of his company manufacturing in China, if we scrape away the glossy paint, what we see is nothing more or less than a race to the bottom for workers pay rates, workers rights, workers conditions, the environment and the social and economic impacts of this race in which Mr Moon is now leading the field - with blinkers on."
