CEPNZ calls for ban on fireworks

The CEPNZ has launched a nationwide petition to call on the total ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public.

This is the time of year that we see the news reporting incidents on the misuse of fireworks and now is the best time to gain support for this petition. It is not about forcing the ‘moral’ opinion of one group upon the rest of society; it is about admitting the fact that an increasing number of individuals have a total lack of regard for other people’s safety, property and the animals and plants of our environment.

In effect, our retailers are supplying the raw materials for potential terrorists to do harm to others. After all, wasn’t the original Guy Fawkes a terrorist?

We admit that the majority of people use fireworks in a proper and safe manner and it is not our intent to be “party-poopers” but public displays are available in most regions, so wouldn’t it be safer to watch a professionally organised display in order to stop delinquents getting their hands on the equipment to inflict harm on people, houses, schools and animals?

Our petition states: “We the undersigned request that the use of fireworks be

restricted to public displays under the control of a fully trained operator by law and that the sale of fireworks by retailers to the general public be banned and the use of fireworks by members of the public be made a summary offence before November 2007.”
