Rainbows End Gets Thumbs Up
from Drug Educators
Rainbows End’s decision to not serve alcohol during park opening hours is a courageous decision in the face of today’s culture.
Jennie Milne from Focus on the Family’s Drug Proofing Your Kids programme says “This is a great opportunity for parents and families to show that you can have a huge amount of fun without alcohol.”
Teen drug and alcohol use is as much a parent problem as it is a teen problem. And according to Columbia University Centre of Substance Abuse and Addiction, parental attitudes and example are the KEY influence on how children will respond.
This is backed up by the Australian Institute of Family Studies 2004 report on Parenting Influences on Adolescent Alcohol Use which showed that parents can be a powerful force in preventing their children from drinking too early.
Well done to Rainbows End for setting the right example and taking away the added ‘peer pressure’ for both adults and teens that accompanies so many social situations of “will I or won’t I have a drink”.
Addressing the culture of alcohol in our country is a collective, community responsibility and we congratulate Rainbows End for courageously playing their part!
