63,000 People Removed from New Electoral Rolls

New electoral rolls released today reveal the equivalent of all the residents in Whangarei and Ashburton have been removed from the rolls in the past year because they haven’t kept their details up-to-date.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre has released for public display the first set of updated electoral rolls since the last election. They include changes since the 2005 general election and this year’s Maori Electoral Option.

“63,089 people - or roughly the populations of Whangarei and Ashburton - have had their names removed from the electoral rolls because they have moved house and not updated their details,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.

“The Electoral Enrolment Centre has two messages for voters – enrol to vote as soon as you are eligible and keep your details up-to-date,” says Mr Wicks.

“The new electoral rolls are out, and this is a good time to check you’re enrolled and take action if you’re not. If your details are not correct, your vote at any future Parliamentary or local elections may not count.”

To enrol or update your details call 0800 36 76 56, Freetext your name and address to 3676, visit a PostShop and fill in an enrolment form or going online to www.elections.org.nz. People can check their enrolment details online as well.

The new electoral rolls are on display now at PostShops, public libraries, court houses and Registrars of Electors offices around the country.

Over the past 12 months, the electoral roll has had a net increase of 39,990 people. 2,887,386 people or 94.8% of the eligible population are now enrolled to vote.
