Alliance Conference puts people first, public good policies back on the table

"We won't deliver tax cuts to Don Brash, and we won't make a new rugby stadium a priority, but we will work for quality housing, secure jobs, free education and affordable power for all New Zealanders."

That's the message delegates from throughout New Zealand will be hearing at the annual conference of the Alliance Party in Wellington over the weekend.

The conference is taking place at the Wellington Arts Centre, 61 Abel Smith Street, Wellington, opening at 9.30am on Saturday and closing on Sunday afternoon.

The Alliance Party is New Zealand's party of the genuine left, and acted as the opposition to the New Right policies of National and Labour in the 1990s.

As part of the Labour-Alliance coalition Government from 1999-2002, the Alliance had successes with the introduction of paid parental leave and Kiwibank.

Despite a low vote in the 2005 election, the Alliance Party is committed to its role as the left wing, democratic socialist voice in New Zealand politics.

The Alliance is a registered political party with branches operating in the main centres, and its members are active in the community working for the public good.

The Alliance Party is actively committed to fighting the big business funded, anti-worker policies of National and its right wing allies, whether the Exclusive Brethren, the Business Roundtable or the ACT Party.

Unlike the pro-free trade, pro-capitalist Labour Party, the Alliance Party does not have any confusion as to where our loyalty lies – it lies with the working people of New Zealand.

The Alliance rejects the covert racism of New Zealand First, and the hypocritical moralism of the United Future and Progressive Parties.

The Alliance differentiates itself from the Green Party by making its concern for the impact on low and fixed income working people the primary focus of its policy, and placing the blame for environmental devastation where it belongs – on the free market capitalist economic and social system.

No other party except the Alliance advocates a costed progressive tax system, free education, quality housing for all, genuine full employment (not casual insecure jobs), a dedicated health tax to properly fund our health care, and the full public and democratic control of public utilities such as electricity.
