Men Challenged: "Wear Your White Ribbons"

"New Zealand men are to be congratulated for wearing white ribbons, demonstrating their support for the campaign against violence towards women," says Christine Low, National President of the National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ).

"NCWNZ is heartened to see that men are acknowledging that violence against women is also their issue. Even Parliament has been embellished with giant white ribbons tied to its pillars."

The campaign, organised by UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) is supported by a wide range of community organisations and the Families Commission. It is focused on changing attitudes and behaviour which condone physical and emotional violence.

The White Ribbon campaign was started by a men's movement in Canada in 1991, and 25 November has been officially adopted by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
