Energy Data File released

The Ministry of Economic Development today released the latest edition of the Energy Data File. This report includes comprehensive information on New Zealand’s energy supply, demand and prices.

There have been several changes to this edition of the Energy Data File.

To improve consistency, the Energy Data File has standardised the presentation of information on a calendar year basis. Most information is current to the end of the 2005 calendar year.
The introduction of colour graphs has improved the presentation of the Energy Data File and made it easier to interpret.

Main highlights of this edition include:

- Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) remaining relatively constant at 740 petajoules in 2005 (742 petajoules in 2004).

- Coal production increasing 2%, from 137 petajoules in 2004 to 140 petajoules in 2005, while both exports and imports of coal increased.

- Total electricity generation remaining relatively constant at 41,500 GWh in 2005.

- Natural gas production decreasing 7%, from 156 petajoules in 2004 to 144 petajoules in 2005.

- Total domestic consumption of petrol and diesel for the 2005 calendar year rising to 223 petajoules, 2.2% higher than the previous year. During this period, there were the following changes to the relative shares:
o Premium petrol was 26 petajoules, up 5.1%.
o Regular petrol was 90 petajoules, up 2.8%.
o Diesel was 107 petajoules, up 1.5%.

The Energy Data File is available on-line at the Ministry of Economic Development website www.med.govt.nz. Hard copies are available at a cost of NZ$60 (plus GST and postage) each by emailing energyinfo[at]med.govt.nz

The data in the Energy Data File is also available on a quarterly basis from the Ministry’s website.
