Foodbank food appeal this Saturday at Wellington supermarkets
Help stock up Downtown Community Ministry's food bank shelves this Saturday by donating to the Christmas food bank food appeal at Wellington supermarkets.
Throughout the day volunteers with flyers listing suggested food bank items will be greeting shoppers and collecting donations they make.
Downtown Community Ministry volunteers will be collecting at Wellington City, Newtown and Metro New World's.
Food bank coordinator Graham Anderson says, "Supermarket shoppers can help us fill up the food bank and get their weekly shopping done at the same time".
"Food donations on Saturday will see that the people coming to us for food parcels over Christmas and into the New Year won't go away hungry," he says.
The Christmas appeal often attracts more special treat like donations with donors wanting to spread some festive cheer to food bank users.
The treats are loved by food bank users as well as the essential items such as cereals, fish and canned vegetables.
Graham says, "Most of our food bank users are people on Sickness and Invalid Benefits. They often have very little left to spend on even basic food items so food parcels become a crucial regular food source".
Those people not able to give to the appeal on Saturday are asked to drop their donations into DCM at their Compassion House offices on Lukes Lane.
