Give corporate electricity parasites the boot

The Alliance Party says that much of the cost of the Government's new energy plans will be borne by the poorest in our society.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says those who do not have the money to pay for the latest energy technologies will be forced to pay higher prices.

The so-called free market in electricity has resulted in unaccountable corporations controlling power while many struggle to pay their monthly bill, he says.

"The only way to ensure affordable power and environmental protection is to give the corporate model the boot."

Mr Billot says the government still owns several corporatized power utilities which it currently milks for cash, receiving over a billion dollars in the last year in dividends while many New Zealanders go cold and go without.

"Little new infrastructure has been built since the split up of the ECNZ, yet the value of assets is significantly higher. The companies have revaluated existing assets significantly. The higher value of assets mean the companies demand higher returns – and it is low income New Zealanders who pay the price."

Under our current situation, the poor will be forced to freeze until the people of New Zealand elect a new government that removes the burden of the free market electricity experiment, says Mr Billot.

The Alliance Party wants to "take back the power", putting electricity, gas and water under public ownership and democratic accountability.

The Alliance policy for energy will ensure environmental sustainability and the right of all people to access affordable electricity.
