Appointment of Chief Executive and Chief Review Officer, Education Review Office

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, announced today that Dr Graham Stoop has been appointed as Chief Executive and Chief Review Officer, Education Review Office. Dr Stoop is presently Chief Executive Officer of the Christchurch College of Education.

Mark Prebble says Graham Stoop has extensive experience in education administration and in curriculum development at local and national levels. This experience extends across the compulsory, tertiary and teacher education sectors and in managing large high schools.

Dr Stoop is widely respected in the education sector and has a proven record in engaging with stakeholders and communities on education matters. He is a member of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Councils for Educational Administration and is currently on the Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

In his current role as Chief Executive Officer of the Christchurch College of Education
Dr Stoop led a merger with the University of Canterbury. He has managed 350 to 400 staff and has experience in managing staff in a multi-site environment as the College has six campuses. Dr Stoop was also responsible for all academic processes relating to the merger of the College’s teacher education programmes with the University of Canterbury.

Dr Stoop was previously Principal at Burnside High School and earlier in his career had taught at Wellington East Girls’ College, Wellington College and Hillmorton High.

Mark Prebble says that Graham Stoop has the experience and skills required for this position.

“He understands the issues facing the Chief Review Officer and the Education Review Office and is very keen to tackle the challenges they present. Graham is passionate about education and its role in society.”

The Education Review Office is a strongly performing organisation that has built and maintained relationships within the education sector and contributed to improving its performance under the previous chief executive, Karen Sewell. Dr Stoop will build on the achievements of the last five years.

"Graham will take up the position early in the new year," Mark Prebble said.
