Politicians To Debate Social Justice At Parachute
Politicians To Debate Social Justice At Parachute Festival ’07
New Zealand’s leaders will come together this Sunday at the annual Parachute Festival in Hamilton to debate social justice; what it looks like and how it can best be provided.
Maxim Institute is pleased to be hosting the Social Justice Political Forum, and CEO Greg Fleming, looks forward to the challenging task of keeping the MPs in line and on time.
MPs taking part include:
- Hon Bill English (National)
- Sue Moroney (Labour)
- Sue
Bradford (Greens)
- Doug Woolerton (New
Zealand First)
- Judy Turner (United Future)
“Most people think social justice is important, but ask someone what it actually is, and you’ll get a different answer every time. Our politicians undoubtedly have vastly different views on how best to pursue social justice in New Zealand. The Forum is an opportunity to highlight these differences and spark debate about this important concept”, says Greg Fleming.
“The 2005 election debate attracted more than 4,000 festival-goers and we look forward to another great turnout this year. It is exciting to see so many young people engaging with key political ideas and leaders—especially at a music festival”, says Fleming.
Parachute is the largest music festival in Australasia, with over 30,000 people expected to attend the Festival at some stage over the weekend.
“This year Maxim Institute is investing significant time into the discussion around social justice. Later this year we will be holding a forum on social justice, bringing together a wide array of community, business and political leaders. We also look forward to publishing a new book, Pursuing Social Justice in New Zealand, featuring stories from prominent New Zealanders about the power of community in creating social justice. The book will be released at the Forum in March”, Fleming says.
