Convergence 2007: Building Media for Social Change
MEDIA RELEASE: Aotearoa Indymedia Convergence 2007: Building
Alternative Media for Social Change
FROM: Aotearoa
Independent Media Centre
DATE: 1st February 2007
The Aotearoa Indymedia Convergence 2007 will take place in Tamaki-Makaurau (Auckland) this weekend (2-4 February). Indymedia is a global network started in 1999 for the protests against the World Trade Organisation meeting in Seattle. In Aotearoa, the Independent Media Centre (www.indymedia.org.nz) has been active for 5 years.
"We will start with a film night on Friday, 2nd Feb, screening documentaries about the resistance of Tuuhoe and the aftermath of the 2006 Tongan riots" says indymedia activist Danyl Strype.
"On Saturday and Sunday we will have a range of workshop on media activism including photography, video skills and conducting interviews."
"The purpose of this event is to create space for a range of people involved in independent media in Aotearoa to meet each other and learn about each other's projects, shares skills, discuss issues affecting media freedom and access and brainstorm strategy and tactics for what we can do to make media that allow communities to share their stories rather than media that broadcasts the profit-motivated propaganda of corporations and their lackeys."
