Early morning raids
smash black market paua ring
A poaching and black market paua ring leading centred on Wellington has been broken when a Wellington man was found in possession of almost 200kgs of frozen shucked paua believed to have been destined for the black market trade.
Ministry of Fisheries’ Investigations Manager, Mike Green, says the apprehension is the culmination of a two-month coordinated investigation into the illegal supply and sale of black market paua.
A number of other people including divers and associates identified in this Investigation have also been spoken to and a number of Court appearances are envisaged. Most could face serious Fishery Act charges and be liable for up to five years in prison and/or $250,000 fines if convicted.
Fishery officers have also seized 5 vehicles identified as being used in the commission of the offending, along with two freezers and assorted dive gear. Also seized was a quantity of money.
Up to 35 officers including a number of Police officers assisted with the search of a number of private homes, and a business premise in Wellington and the Opotiki areas. Enquiries are ongoing.
“This has been a long and resource-intense enquiry involving Ministry of Fisheries’ staff from all around the North Island and the top of the South.” Mr Green says. “The termination follows many hours of good old-fashioned surveillance and investigation work.”
