Smacking lobby have got the wrong end of the stick say Anglicans
The pro-smacking lobby have got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to the debate over section 59, an Anglican leader said this morning.
“Their interpretation of the scriptures is too literal,” the Venerable Dr Hone Kaa said today. “They focus on rules rather than the essence of scripture which is a message of love and compassion.”
Dr Kaa said that Christians need to embrace new models of parenting and discipline.
“We know about the impact that violence has on our children and families, especially Maori whanau, and that is why as Anglicans we support the repeal of Section 59. We know that there are better ways of disciplining children than hitting them. As Christians it is our responsibility to carry this new message of love.”
Dr Kaa will join other Christians at a silent march to parliament which starts at St Paul’s Cathedral in Wellington today at 1.30pm.
Dr Kaa is a lecturer is theology at St John’s Theological College in Auckland, and a prominent Maori Anglican leader. He has a long history of involvement in broadcasting, politics, and activism.
