Acting Chief Executive Ministry of Fisheries

The State Services Commissioner, Mark Prebble, today announced that Stan Crothers has agreed to act as Chief Executive of the Ministry of Fisheries.

Stan is currently the Deputy Chief Executive of the Ministry. He has worked in the Ministry for over 30 years and has international, policy, regulatory, compliance and machinery of government expertise. He has held a number of senior management positions and leadership roles within the Ministry.

Stan was involved in establishing the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone, designing and implementing New Zealand’s successful Quota Management System, and was responsible for leading the establishment of the Ministry of Fisheries.

More recently he has worked on the Ministry’s strategic direction, developing institutional frameworks to decentralise fisheries services, and has been involved in policy development, including cost recovery, defining and protecting customary fishing rights, aquaculture reform, recreational fishing reform, and Oceans Policy.

The State Services Commission has the recruitment process for a permanent chief executive appointment underway.
