Parliament hypocritical to get tough on streakers
“While considering the Major Events Management Bill, which among other things will dramatically increase the criminal consequences for streaking at sporting matches, parliament should also assess the damage inflicted upon the country’s reputation when its own MPs streak,” claims to a leading Auckland business district that had to endure a naked MP.
“It’s crazy that MP Keith Locke can streak down Broadway after losing an election, but a member of the public will land a nasty criminal record for having some fun during half time at a rugby match,” says Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.
“Before MPs get all righteous, I challenge them to look at their own antics at election time. I challenge MPs to include general elections into their definition of ‘major events’. That might just save us next time from the sight of 60-year-old MPs in nothing more than body paint. What’s more that obscene imagery went all around the world.”
After the 2005 General Election, Green MP Keith Locke streaked down Broadway, Newmarket, after vowing he would if Act MP Rodney Hide won the seat of Epsom.
“It seems it’s all right for MPs to get their kit off when it suits them, but when anyone else wants to have some fun they’ll get thrown the book. It’s very hypocritical,” said Mr Brewer.
