Today Young Labour called for informed public discussion about the shape of New Zealand’s democracy.
Young Labour President Meg Bates said “Greater civics education is vital for our democracy. Giving young people the tools to understand our parliamentary process and political society is the next step towards a more inclusive New Zealand.”
Ms Bates added, “ Young Labour would have to see Sue Bradford’s Private Member’s Bill before it can indicate support one way or the other, but we encourage any debate that seeks to empower young people in engaging with the political sphere.”
“Research into voting patterns shows that citizens who vote the first time they are eligible are much more likely to continue to vote throughout their lives.”
“Young people’s perspectives should be taken seriously, and the contribution they make must be recognised as important. As citizens, young people have a responsibility to be active in our democracy and civics education will empower them to do so.”
“We have to send a message to young people that political involvement is important and that the stepping stone to that involvement is knowledge and information. Let’s give young New Zealanders a chance to have their say and be a valid and respected part of our inclusive society.”
Ms Bates concluded “Young Labour looks forward to the exchange of ideas – and hopes that this debate will ultimately strengthen our democracy.”
