More Biofuels facts, less biofuel scares needed
There is no place for scaremongering following the launch of Gull's 10 per cent bioethanol blended fuel for motorists says Mike Underhill, Chief Executive of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).
"This is a first for New Zealand and Gull are to be applauded for making a start. We look forward to seeing growth in the use of biofuels in future, says Mike Underhill.
"Biofuels are used by hundreds of millions of vehicles across the world everyday without problems. We know that they are compatible with the majority of the New Zealand fleet."
Concerns regarding the potential for corrosion in some older Japanese imports are based on tests completed in Japan on sub standard fuel containing a corrosive agent. The blend being offered in New Zealand is of a higher standard and includes corrosion inhibitors. EECA is confident that most new and many older vehicles models can run on the E10 bioethanol blended petrol provided by Gull.
EECA advises motorists to contact their vehicle manufacturer regarding vehicle fuel compatibility. Consumers should also always look for the EECA biofuels label when purchasing biofuel blends to ensure that the fuel meets quality specifications
EECA congratulates Gull Petroleum on being the first oil company in New Zealand to provide a commercially available biofuel for New Zealand motorists.
"This is exactly what New Zealand needs," says Mike Underhill Chief Executive of EECA. "Forward thinking businesses that realise the competitive and environmental benefits of biofuels and that take the lead ahead of any regulations.
EECA has produced a brochure for people who wish to see more information about bioethanol and it can be found on www.eeca.govt.nz.
