Privacy Awareness Week: 26 August - 1 September 2007

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is holding New Zealand's first Privacy Awareness Week from 26 August to 1 September.

This is an international event, which will be held at the same time across Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand, and organised through the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) network. The winner of APPA's student writing competition will be announced during the Week.

The theme of the Week is "Privacy is Your Business", a play on words encouraging people to think about the importance of privacy in both their personal and working lives. It also highlights for the business world how important robust privacy policies are to consumer trust and confidence.


Events include:

Monday 26 August: Computer Society breakfast, Auckland
Speech by Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff - announcement of new business/privacy initiative.

Tuesday 27 August: Privacy and Technology in the 21st Century
Forum in Wellington, 8.30 am-12.30pm
Speech by Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff – 'Privacy Pollution'
Other speakers at the forum include: Miriam Lips, Victoria University E-Government fellow; Philip Greene, InternetNZ Senior Research Fellow in Cyberlaw, Victoria University School of Law; Hank Wolfe, Associate Professor, Otago University Information Science Department; Peter Gutmann, University of Auckland Department of Computer Science researcher; Liz Butterfield, "Hector's World" Managing Director and founder of NetSafe; Hugh McPhail, State Services Commission ICT Branch, Manager E-government Strategy and Policy; Martin Cocker, NetSafe Executive Director; Brett Roberts, Microsoft New Zealand Director of Innovation; Nigel Waters, privacy consultant, researcher and former Deputy Privacy Commissioner, Australia.
