Family Violence is Hurting Communities

City Council candidate, Roger Ellis, today urged Wellingtonians to support the Campaign For Action on Family Violence.

“Half of all murders in New Zealand are family-violence related.

On average every year 14 women, six men and 10 children die as a result of family violence. It’s time for us to say ‘enough is enough’”said Mr Ellis.

“Individuals and communities across NZ are coming together to say that family violence is not OK. It’s time to end the violence” said Mr Ellis.

Last year, New Zealand police dealt with more than 70,000 calls about family violence. That’s one call every seven and a half minutes.

“Quite apart from the tragic consequences for the victims and families – the social and financial costs to communities is substantial. Family violence causes families to break up and jeopardises children’s health, education and long-term outcomes. All of us have an interest in overcoming family violence in our neighbourhoods and communities” said Mr Ellis.

“I applaud the Families Commission, the Ministry of Social Development and voluntary agencies who are working together to raise awareness and tackle this problem” said Mr Ellis.

“It’s good to raise national awareness about family violence but it happens at the local level and I think that’s where the solutions are also to be found” said Mr Ellis.

The Families Commission-led Campaign For Action on Family Violence is a national four year campaign launched today which aims to change the way New Zealanders think about family violence.
