A judge in the Auckland District Court has today ruled against bail conditions that would have stopped activists from protesting outside Mt. Eden Remand Center this weekend.
Before a judge this morning in the district court, one of the Global Peace and Justice Auckland activists arrested over the weekend successfully contested highly restrictive police bail conditions. The conditions included non-association with other activists and that the activists must stay 500 meters away from the Remand Center.
A judge ruled against the police prosecutor, claiming the bail conditions were an attempt by police to impede activists who will this Saturday return to the Remand Center to protest the government continued incarceration of another Iranian asylum seeker, Amir Mohebbi.
Spokesperson for the activists Omar Hamed said, "Quite clearly the police are not taking a neutral role in this dispute. Restricting our ability to protest outside the prison and associate with each other is a clear attack on our civil rights."
"There are still four activists to go before court this week and at the upcoming status hearings on Thursday and Friday we will continue to dispute bail conditions that limit our civil rights."
