Minimum Wage Amendment Bill

www.republicans.org.nz

Date 5th September 2007

Press Release
For immediate release.

Green MP Sue Bradford's Minimum Wage Amendment Bill, due to have its third and final reading in Parliament tonight, is nothing more than a waste of parliamentary time, says Republicans employment spokesman Dave Llewell.

What is the next private members bill from this MP going to be, “the children don’t have to do the dishes at home bill”

What this Private Member's Bill says is that our youth will get paid the same as adults just for turning up to work. It does not encourage our youth to strive for improvement and it is a slap in the face to older loyal employees who have worked their way up the employment ladder. Anyone who gave this some thought would realise this bill is more likely to create youth unemployment than provide youth job opportunities.

You can see why we need Republicans in the house, says Mr Llewell,

“On this basis we would have some MP’s being paid the same as ministers even before they had learned how to use a parliamentary rubbish bin.”
