Caritas welcomes response to recent international
needs
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is pleased at New
Zealanders’ response to recent international emergencies
and appeals.
The New Zealand public has contributed
about $17,500 to Caritas’ emergency response to the South
Asia monsoon floods, and over $11,000 towards the Peru
earthquake in August. In addition, $13,855 has come in for a
special appeal for HIV/AIDS related work in the Pacific.
“A number of international emergencies have
occurred in recent months,” said Caritas Director Mike
Smith. “It’s good to see that this hasn’t deterred New
Zealanders from responding generously when needed”.
The worst flooding in decades has affected large
swathes of Africa and South Asia, while the Peru quake left
tens of thousands homeless.
“We’re continuing to
receive funds for the South Asia and Peru emergencies, where
Caritas partners say recovery will take much time,” said
Mr Smith. “New Zealanders’ donations have helped with
emergency shelter, water, food and medicines in both
regions. Our partner agencies in the countries affected will
continue helping people rebuild their lives.”
“They need our ongoing support,” said Mr Smith.
“Disasters like these hit the poor hardest and longest.”
Health authorities in Bangladesh say that children of poor
families in flood-affected areas in Bangladesh are showing
signs of stunted growth, as food is harder and more costly
to obtain.
“We’re also grateful for the generous
response of Kiwis to our neighbours in the Pacific,” said
Mr Smith. The Solomon Islands tsunami appeal earlier in the
year raised the full amount required – $70,000, while the
HIV/AIDS appeal launched in July has raised $13,855.
“This will help our Pacific partners’ work in
supporting those who have the virus, and education and human
rights work aimed at preventing its spread,” said Mr
Smith.
