Study Finds Major Investment Needed For Community Housing

A nine month study released last night by the Centre for Housing Research Aotearoa New Zealand (CRANZ) has determined that major funding is needed for community housing across the country. Community housing is also referred to as, "third sector" housing as it accounts for all other types of housing that is neither privately held nor owned by the state.

The community housing sector is expected to grow rapidly as more and more Kiwis are unable to afford their own home and as baby-boomers continue to retire from the workforce. CRANZ has identified the need for long term solutions such as investing in Community Housing Aotearoa, Inc. (CHAI) as a catalyst for growing the capacities of many housing providers across the country and as a unifying organisation to fill the gap between the private and state housing sectors. Unlike in the UK or Australia, New Zealand has yet to clearly define where community housing providers fit into the system. As a result, there are no standards by which the sector operates.

CRANZ recognises the importance of developing this sector into a professional field to attract and train qualified housing professionals. As a result, CRANZ recommends increased government funding for CHAI to build capacity within the sector and becoming a united voice for community housing providers across the country.

CHAI represents more than 140 community based housing organizations. See www.communityhousing.org.nz for details.
